You Can Impact Healthy Eating with Hydroponics
When a student plants a seed, enjoys the wonder of watching it sprout, and takes care of the plant, they are more likely to eat it. Plus veggies grown in a classroom can taste much better than veggies served in a cafeteria, creating the desire for students to eat more.
We’ve watched 5th and 6th graders give healthy eating presentations to kindergartners. These students served their younger peers a side-salad from lettuce grown on a Tower Garden in their classroom. The older kids told their younger peers to eat more veggies and eat less sweets. They went through MyPlate’s 4 food groups. It was incredible to watch!
Even if you’re not a gardener, you can easily bring your students the enjoyment of eating new, healthy food by adding a hydroponic gardening system to your classroom.
